Research

Most information about the research of my former group can be found at the group webpage.

At the publications page you find a short selection of my journal and conference papers and books. I have published more than one hundred journal papers, conference papers and book chapters as well as quite a few workshop papers, conference proceedings and workshop proceedings. I have organized more then 20 workshops. I have been part of more then 50 program committees of international conferences in software engineering (e.g., SPLC, TOOLS, APSEC, WICSA). Furthermore I have been a reviewer for research proposals for the European Union, the Dutch science organization (NWO) and several journals. I am an editor and co-editor of several special issues of journals.

My main research topics are:

Software Architecture:

· Software architecture assessment, e.g., for modifiability, usability and variability

· Modeling architecture design decisions

· Design erosion

Software Product Families:

· Compositional software platforms

· Software variability management

· Maturity and evaluation frameworks

I am or have been promoter more than 10 PhD candidates including several industrial PhD candidates from, among others, Nokia, Philips and Siemens. Currently, I advise the following PhD candidates:

· Christian DelRosso (Nokia Research Center)

· Alessandro Maccari (Nokia Networks)

· Ernst Kesseler (Dutch Aerospace Laboratory)

· Sybren Deelstra (University of Groningen)

· Marco Sinnema (University of Groningen)

· Anton Jansen ((University of Groningen)

Earlier Ph.D. candidates include:

· Michael Stal, Siemens Corporate Research (PhD 2007)

· Antti Aaltonen, Nokia Research Center (PhD 2007)

· Michel Jaring, University of Groningen (PhD 2005). Thesis title: Variability Engineering as an Integral Part of the Software Product Family Development Process.

· Eelke Folmer, University of Groningen (PhD 2005). Thesis title: Software Architecture Analysis of Usability

· Rob van Ommering, Philips Research (PhD 2004). Thesis title: Building Product Populations with Software Components.
