Since the spring of 2007 I work for Intuit in Mountain View, California. Prior to joining Intuit, I worked for several years at Nokia Research Center. Before that I lived 4 years in the Netherlands where I am a full professor of Software Engineering at the University of Groningen. I lived in Sweden from 1994 until 2000, and worked at the Blekinge Institute of Technology. In 2003, I spent three months in Canada as a visiting professor at the  University of Alberta, Edmonton. My main research interests are in software architecture assessment, design and representation, software product lines, including variability management, organizational approaches and product family architecture design, design erosion, component-oriented software engineering, object-oriented frameworks and design patterns.

I hold a MSc degree is from the University of Twente, the Netherlands (1991) and a PhD degree from Lund University, Sweden (1995).

I'm married to Petra; currently a visiting scholar at Stanford University, CA, where she studies knowledge management, workplaces and global, distributed teams. Together we have three wonderful boys: David, born in April 1997, Nathan, born in August 1999 and Adam born in February 2005. To illustrate our lifestyle a little, we have lived in five countries in the last 10 years and, as a consequence, I am fluent in Dutch, English and Swedish and speak some rudimentary German.

Outside work, I spend time on sports especially running, swimming and horseback riding. In 2006, I ran three marathons, Stockholm Marathon (3:46:28), Helsinki City Marathon (3:47:25) and Vantaa Marathon (3:34:58). In 2007 I ran San Francisco Marathon (3:44:34). Also, I read science fiction with Neal Stephenson being my favorite author and William Gibson as a close second. During the holidays, mountain hiking in the Alps, Pyrenees or the Rockies is one of my favorite activities. The pictures above are (left) me on the summit of Mt. Shasta (4.322 meters/14,179 ft) and (right) Half Dome (2.693 m/8,836 ft).
